University librarians surveyed TWU faculty who teach Freshmen AND librarians coming to AISL to gather data about proficiency and bridging any gaps that might exist.
Freshman today need help with:
- Identifying and articulating their information need.
- Developing a thesis.
- Searching for background information.
- Finding credible information online.
- Locating books.
- Finding & using scholarly articles.
- Finding & using statistical data.
- Identifying & locating primary & secondary sources.
- Using historical information.
- Using social media as an information source.
- Doing lateral searches--using citations to locate information sources (Reader's Guide to Periodicals anyone?)
- Determining relevance of information for research purposes.
- Evaluating quality, currency, authority.
- Understanding economic, legal, & social issues related to information~using legally and ethically. i.e.: Avoiding plagiarism, paraphrasing, writing bibliography/annotated bibliography, Using Refworks (or EasyBib or Noodletools) to cite information.
- University requires students to keep a journal or log of information seeking activities (seeking, evaluating, communicating effectiveness). Need help with this too.
AISL librarians surveyed prior to conference re: Seniors preparedness:
TCU Information Commons--Renovation Information Session Taking 800,000 books (lower use items) moving offsite.
Opac shelf icon offers visual browsing, uses amazon book jackets. Can call a book from offsite if need it.
Virtually interfiles ebooks so all related materials are interfiled virtually.
Evaluating info sources crucial skill for Freshmen. Before, students accessed sites that librarians had vetted. Now everything is just out there, hard to discern.
"Pink noise" their PC term for white noise. Technology by Herman Miller company. Linked together with one unit. Reservations for station. Check out keyboard and wireless mouse. Media scape technology. Online reservation. Seats 4-6 comfortably.
Steeplechase table with Herman miller technology.
Carpet with rubber backing. Housekeeping said just no red dye.
Smart board to practice on. Tape yourself as you present to check for ticks, etc.
Students move everything. Furniture must be light weight and flexible.
Raised floor crucial for wiring. If reconfigure room in future, the raised floor will save time/money.
Signage clear and speaks in their terms, not ours.
Drexel had periodicals in browsing section. Sometimes no print at all in info commons. Carels and tables upstairs with print sources.
Higher end computers designated for particular needs. Streaming databases ie. machines equipped to handle info.
Presentation capture software good for students and librarians for screencast tutorials. Adobe suite. Movie editing.
Autocad. GIS software. SPSS on a select few computers. Students reserve them.
Media scape to share screen. Software teamspot, makoko
Library liaisons for each dept. (If we had enough staff, would be great to assign to departments, attend meetings, discuss needs at beginning of year and collaborate throughout, perform collection development, etc.)
Sit in grad lounge to offer help, sports teams, Greek. Ref desk but also special tutoring within depts. kids know who specializes in what. Email or in place. Referrals by desk.
Demo table whiteboard on it, petunia shaped. Write able table. (Recurring theme--I like it.)
Facilities built them a Laptop cabinet with fans to cool, plugs for charging. Can lock up.
2nd monitor for displaying reference help. Swing around. Good idea.
Write able surfaces, paint, walls, wallpaper. Moveable furniture. Space to spread out
Duke--see library Genius Bar.
Large data sets in visualization room to see patterns in lrg amounts of data.
Cysco telespot room. Expensive. Transport to other place.
Took inspiration from U of Chicago, visited Hunt library at NC state.
Rather than DVD's, they subscribe to streaming databases. Love Alexander street press. Met opera on demand.
Films on demand. Good but licensing structure strange. Lots of educational films.
