Why teach writing??
“I hear and I forget, ….I teach and I understand.”
Believes that we should all write. It improves life. Allows for reflection, contemplation. Don’t approach it like a triathelon, if we expect certain results we set ourselves up for frustration.

Breakaway Session: Marketing your library program to teachers, students, parents, administration
Teachers think that students know more than they know.
Suggests giving faculty an opportunity to search databases. They assume that their kids know how, but do they?!
Got university librarians to speak to faculty about what Freshman don’t know. It’s better coming from them.
Is the beginning of the school year a better time to present than the end of the year? Burned out at the end. Could inspire collaboration throughout the year if reach them at the beginning.
Definitely incorporate into new faculty orientation.
Visit department mettings to pitch what we can do.
Invite new faculty in during lunch. Bake for them. Attend coffees. Share libguides to give them ideas of things you can do.
Invite departments in to assist with weeding to remind them of treasures in collection!
Starbucks cards for super collaborators.
Colorado Academy did a mini renovation. Painted all wooden tables with whiteboard paint. Added wheels. Whitebords on wheels. Called new space a “Learning Lab”. Invited classes in to use the space.
Purchased camping chairs (lean back in) unlike space in classroom. Invite classes in!
Put QR codes around to specific Libguides (or homepage)
Attend every teacher’s class and offer positive feedback on what you observed.
Ask teachers to require 1:1 meetings, to use librarians, sources.
Get caught reading board. Photos of young faculty with favorite book. Create iMovie promoting events in the library.
Dave tweets a lot, mosty because his admin is very twitter savvy. Watches what ideas/tweets they like. Shares pix of life in library, ideas he has for the building, Advises: “Go where the admin is if you want their attention.”
Garner attention from outsiders.
Partner with communications.
Create a laminated sign for teachers,”What I’m reading now”.
Free lending library for teachers.
Tinsley pulls rare book collection out, provides white gloves, allows students to examine. They love it and bring tours in to see every day.
Beanbag room @ St. Marks is very popular. (I second the beanbag!)
Contest between him & the other librarian via book display. Boys like the friendly competition.
Marlbrough provides a selction of F/NF in lounge. Checks out to “lounge” patron. Sign in/out sheet so faculty can let you know who has what. Great convo starter.
Little free library on campus. Ok to call it that.

Admin cares what teachers are saying more than numbers/stats.
Dave seconds the visual approach. Used LAPSE IT app to film students entering/exiting for an hour—creates 1.5 minute video. Share with admin via googledrive. Very telling!
